Although the idea of enchanting gear doesn't sound like it will be a gold maker in the World of Warcraft, the fact that you are able to disenchant gear is what will make you all of the money.
Taken directly from Blizzard's website - "Enchanting is a higher-level Profession, thus requiring more work than most Professions...There are six levels of enchanting: Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Artisan, Master, and Grand Master. You will need to work your way up the ladder to enable more powerful enchantments [and disenchants]."
Once an item is disenchanting, the materials received can be sold on the Auction House in order to make gold. A good idea is to constantly search the Auction House for certain green / blue items, depending on their chances of disenchanting into good materials, buying them, and then reselling the mats.
Another option to make gold on WoW through disenchanting is to offer a COD service, where you pay others "Cash on Delivery" for any items that are sent to you. Specify a level requirement and a minimum price given per item, and your mailbox will soon become full of others items, who are too lazy to bother selling them, themselves.
For example, on a well known PVP server, the current going price is any Green item, level 75+ will get you 10g COD. These will disenchant into a few Infinite Dust and Greater Cosmic Essences. Infinite Dusts bring around 4g at the Auction House, while Greater Cosmic Essences bring 12g. In the end, quite a bit of money is made through disenchanting in this way.
Good luck with your enchanting / disenchanting, and good luck making money in the World of Warcraft!
